The Get Ready Queensland Challenge, a new educational game to help Queensland children and their families prepare for future disasters and severe weather, is now available online.

The initiative is funded under joint Commonwealth-Queensland Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) through the Community Recovery Fund, established in the wake of the 2019 north and Far North Queensland monsoonal flooding event.

Minister for Emergency Management David Littleproud said given Queensland’s history of significant natural disasters it was important children and their families knew what they needed to do to stay safe.

“We hope the game will provide a good prompt for families to begin discussing these important topics and start thinking about ways they can better prepare for future disasters,” Minister Littleproud said.

“Being prepared before a disaster hits can be the difference between staying safe and putting yourself or others in danger.”

Queensland Treasurer and Minister for Infrastructure and Planning Cameron Dick said the game would help communicate important messages to children via a fun and engaging series of tasks, games and stories.

“The game will reinforce the important messages promoted by the Get Ready Queensland program, which educates Queenslanders about disaster risks and how to be better prepared,” Mr Dick said.

“It will help children learn what they need to include in their ‘grab and go bag’ and their home emergency kit, and how their family can prepare their property for different extreme weather events.”

The Get Ready Queensland Challenge can be accessed via desktop or mobile devices at getready.qld.gov.au/game.
