Qld COVID-19 – Fri May 15: Health caution vital as restrictions ease

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has strongly urged Queenslanders to remain vigilant with social distancing and health care when restrictions ease this weekend, as two more COVID-19 cases come to light - one new and one old.

There are now 17 active cases, 1031 recovered and six deaths for a total of 1054.

Although a careful lifting of some restrictions tomorrow was a credit to Queenslanders, the new case illustrated why extreme care was still needed, the Premier said.

“We have to take gradual and measured steps, we can’t rush things, we have to do this process in line with the health advice.

“We are not out of the woods and we need to make sure that everybody is adhering to the expert advice, keeping up hand hygiene and social distancing, looking after one another.

“It’s a credit to Queenslanders that we’re at Stage One, but cases are still out there.”

Among the changes allowed from tomorrow: up to five visitors at home; gatherings of up to 10 in public; hospitality venues and beauty businesses with up to ten patrons at a time; and recreational travel of a radius of up to 150km from home for day trips.

    Also confirmed today:

    • A return to school for all remaining years on Monday week (May 25th)
    • From this weekend, K’gari (Fraser Island), Mulgumpin (Moreton Island) and Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) will reopen to visitors for day trips within 150km of home
    • From this weekend, Outback residents may travel up to 500km within Outback Queensland for recreation and overnight stays
    • Licensed firearm dealers and armourers may trade with social distancing
