Queensland organisations and sport and recreation clubs will be able to deliver more quality physical activity experiences with 1,469 successful applicants to share in more than $2.8 million from Round One of the Active Clubs program.

Minister for Sport Mick de Brenni said every club which submitted an eligible application was successful in receiving up to $2,000 to help pay for equipment or training.

“We predicted a big response to this new initiative aimed at empowering clubs to get more Queenslanders active and that’s exactly what happened,” said Mr de Brenni.

“Many of the organisations are located in remote or disadvantaged areas where people face extra barriers to participation such as distance, cost or cultural factors so delivering efficient support was key.

“Players, coaches, and volunteers across Queensland are going to see more bats, balls, helmets, coaching accreditation courses, coaching manuals and office equipment at local clubs.

“Having funds to invest in equipment, combined with volunteers who feel confident in their roles will go a long way to creating an excellent culture among clubs.

Round One of Active Clubs was open for applications from 17 October to 15 November.

The approved projects can start rolling out immediately.

Mr de Brenni said Active Clubs is a key element of the Palaszczuk Government’s $1.3 billion plan to Activate! Queensland – getting more Queenslanders moving, more often.

“It doesn’t matter if you enjoy netball or football, cricket or croquet, BMX or triathlon, if you’re a Queenslander you can expect our Government to help your club deliver great opportunities,” he said.

“Sporting clubs are the backbone of local communities – its where we connect, where our kids grow up, and cultivates our elite athletes.

“The streamlined application process means that it took club volunteers only around 10 minutes to submit their proposal for new equipment or training opportunities.”
