The Honourable Cameron Dick
Work is powering ahead on more projects for The Spit master plan with tenders about to be called for detailed design works for the Moondarewa Spit upgrade and the Seaway Promenade.
Minister for State Development Cameron Dick said the design works will start jobs flowing from these projects.
“We’re investing more than $5 million in the Moondarewa Spit upgrade and the Seaway Promenade to create world-class facilities for Gold Coast locals and visitors to enjoy,” Mr Dick said
“The design work and construction on these projects alone are expected to generate at least 16 jobs, with more to come in the future as these facilities attract more people to The Spit precinct.
“The Spit master plan is a game-changer for the Gold Coast and I’m excited about design tenders being called.
“This a great opportunity for designers to come up with something really special that will create new destinations to attract people to this much-loved area.”
Gold Coast Waterways Authority CEO Hal Morris said the projects are stepping up a gear with the call for tenders about to be issued.
“The design works will align with The Spit master plan’s overall vision, which the community was supportive of during consultation.
“We’re a waterways city and we really want to celebrate the connections between the waterways and the foreshores.
“We want to create a welcoming space for our locals and our visitors so that they can come here and enjoy the green spaces and beautiful views – whether it’s watching the sunset over the water from Moondarewa Spit or the sunrise from the Seaway Promenade.”
The Moondarewa Spit upgrade will involve works to improve environmental values and protect the area against erosion, including tree planting, as well as providing more shelters and toilet and shower facilities for park and beach users.
The Seaway Promenade will replace the existing uneven surface with a level pathway, new seaway emergency access stairs, and viewing spots so people can enjoy spectacular views along the coastline of the Gold Coast and towards South Stradbroke Island.
Mr Dick said the invitation to tender will open 17 January 2020, with the successful tenderers expected to be announced in mid-February.
Construction work is expected to start on the Moondarewa Spit upgrade and the Seaway Promenade mid-year, with the new facilities being ready in time for next summer.
