North Queensland Country Club and Equestrian Centre clears new milestone

The proposed North Queensland Country Club Resort and Equestrian Centre near Townsville has edged ahead, with final terms of reference for the project’s environmental impact statement (EIS) released today.

Reaching this milestone allows the proponent, Landmark Projects, to start working on a draft EIS for public consultation, and is recognised as a key part of the approval process.

Minister for State Development Cameron Dick said Landmark Projects estimates the project, if approved, could support 300 full-time jobs during construction and many more operational jobs once fully developed.

“When completed, the country club would provide luxury accommodation buildings, retailing, conference and function facilities, restaurants and a world-class equestrian centre,” he said.

“The development would prove a real boost for north Queensland’s economy, creating a lot of jobs for the region.

“These terms of reference follow public consultation and will ensure potential impacts on the natural, social and economic environment are appropriately considered.

“Landmark Projects will now prepare a draft EIS, and once that satisfies Queensland’s independent Coordinator-General the community will have another opportunity to have their say on the project.”

Member for Townsville Scott Stewart said Landmark Projects estimates construction of Stage 1 could start in 2022, subject to approvals, and the resort could commence operations two years later.

Stage 1 of the project includes a hotel, resort amenities and the equestrian centre.

“Landmark Projects estimates annually spending from resort patrons could be around $61 million each year once Stage 1 is operational,” Mr Stewart said.

“The proponent also estimates the resort will take up to 240,000 visitors per year based on the 560 rooms delivered as part of Stage 1.”

Public comment for the draft terms of reference was open between 13 June and 12 July 2019.
