Grants to help Indigenous councils deliver for their communities

Queensland’s indigenous councils will continue to provide general and essential public services for their communities through more than $40.3 million from three State Government grants.

Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe made the announcement at the Local Government Managers Association Queensland annual conference in Townsville.

He said the annual State Government Financial Aid (SGFA) program had been increased by $863,000 to help 16 councils.

“The councils don’t raise revenue through rates, so the SGFA is crucial to help deliver core local government services for their communities,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“This program will see more than $35.4 million for services such as public order and safety, health, recreation and culture, transport and communication, education and public amenities.

“Importantly, it also assists councils build towards long-term financial sustainability.

“A further $1.44 million will be shared among 15 councils through the Indigenous Economic Development Grant (IEDG), to improve opportunities and maintain jobs in local government.

“As well, the $3.525 million Revenue Replacement Program (RRP) will assist nine councils that gave up profitable general liquor licences.

“These annual funding programs are vital to ensure council operations carry on and demonstrate the Queensland Government’s ongoing commitment to Indigenous communities through the delivery of essential services, job creation and community growth.

“The grants also show what can be achieved when both tiers of government work together for the benefit of local communities.”
