New sports centre on show at Cavendish Road State High School

Member for Greenslopes Joe Kelly has joined Education Minister Grace Grace to officially open the new $7.1 million Alan Sampson Sports Centre at Cavendish Road State High School today.

“This new facility is a welcome addition for Cavendish Road State High, which has a long and proud sporting history,” Mr Kelly said.

“The centre has been named in honour of past Principal, Mr Alan Sampson, who led the school from 1997 to 2010.

“However, the new hall is much more than just an internal sports court – while it includes two multi-purpose sports courts, it also features four kinesiology laboratories, offices, storage rooms, foyer, amenities, kiosk, data room and cleaning facilities.

“I’m sure these facilities will help maintain Cavendish Road State High School’s reputation as one of the most competitive sports schools in Brisbane. As the local member, I am proud to be backing our local schools.”

Cavendish Road State High School Executive Principal Richard Usher said the whole school community was excited about the completion of the Alan Sampson Sports Centre.

“Alan was a wonderful Principal and a very strong advocate for our school – we are very pleased to be able to honour his service to our school by naming the new facility after him,” Mr Usher said.

“Our students have embraced the hall and all that it brings to our school including the four kinesiology laboratories.

“We have a long and strong sporting tradition at our school with famous ex-students including Olympic silver medal winning triathlete Loretta Harrop as well as international soccer players Dario Vidošić and Tahj Minniecon plus American football star Jesse Williams.

“Students come from across the state to be part of our sporting academies in football, netball and touch football.

“This new hall will ensure we keep producing athletes of the calibre of some of our past internationally competitive students.

“The hall is also a lovely and tastefully-designed building that blends in perfectly with the rest of the school.”

Ms Grace said the new hall was delivered through the Palaszczuk Government’s $200 million Advancing Queensland Schools (AQS) program.

“The Cavendish Road State High School hall is one of 30 halls being built or renewed across Queensland under AQS,” she said.

“Importantly, this project supported up to 21 jobs and a total of 14 apprentices during construction.

“The Palaszczuk Government is proud to be investing in the future of our school communities and delivering the facilities our students need to make the most of their education.”
