Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk will today announce the expansion of the Cairns Convention Centre will be even bigger and better than expected.

Drawings have been released of the new Convention Centre showing a new tropical-themed entrance and Sky Terrace offering world-beating views of Trinity Inlet.

The $176 million project will also include more space enabling the centre to cater for multiple functions.

The Premier said the added bonus is the 570 jobs the project will create.

“We only get one chance to do this so we’re going to do it right,” the Premier said.

Member for Cairns Michael Healy said the announcement showed the government’s commitment to the Far North.

“The Convention Centre is an engine room for the Cairns economy and as far as I am concerned the bigger the engine the better,” he said.

“It will also compliment the Global Tourism Hub to further generate more for our region,” he said.

Plans for the new convention centre include:

  • A new entry
  • Space for 30 exhibitors’ booths
  • Three meeting rooms covering a total of 420 square metres
  • A flat floor space for 450 people and
  • A rooftop banqueting space for 410 people

It’s expected the centre will close between May and October 2020 to begin the works with a completion date of early 2022.
