The show will go on: Old Burleigh Theatre Arcade given extra protection

The Palaszczuk Government has granted extra planning protection for iconic Gold Coast seaside theatre, the Old Burleigh Theatre Arcade.

Minister for Planning Cameron Dick today approved City of Gold Coast’s request for a temporary local planning instrument (TLPI) over the site, to ensure its local heritage values were protected.

“The Old Burleigh Theatre Arcade has significant historical and aesthetic values that we need to ensure aren’t lost with future development,” Mr Dick said.

“The building has been a social hub for the Burleigh Heads community for around 90 years, after starting its life as The De-Luxe picture theatre and dance hall in 1930.

“The TLPI begins in retrospect from 30 July 2019 and will be in place for up to two years while council progress the required changes to their planning scheme.

“During this time, the TLPI ensures that the key historical elements of the building such as the façade cannot be demolished.

The almost century-old building houses a variety of eateries and small businesses, as well as the headquarters for sporting not-for-profit Surfing Queensland.

“Preserving local history is important for Queenslanders, which is why we’ve worked with council to fast-track this TLPI,” Mr Dick said.

“Any development applications made for the site in the next two years from that 30 July start date will need to be in line with the requirements of the TLPI.”

Mr Dick said the Department of Environment and Science had recently received an application from the Gold Coast City Council nominating the Old Burleigh Theatre Arcade as a significant local heritage place for listing on the State Heritage Register, and submissions from the community and interested parties were welcome.

“It’s important we ensure buildings like the Old Burleigh Theatre Arcade are here for future generations to enjoy as well.”
