More than 6700 Queenslanders will be assisted to get the work ready skills they need to get a job thanks to the latest round of Skilling Queenslanders for Work funding.

Minister for Training and Skills Development Shannon Fentiman announced the latest round of successful recipients at the Brisbane Broncos Rugby League Club who will be delivering one of 211 projects with more than $43 million in funding.

“From as far north as the Torres Strait and Cape York, through Western Queensland and along the coast, this program is getting Queenslanders the work ready skills and training they need to get a job and build a career,” Ms Fentiman said.

“We know some people are still struggling to find the right opportunity and that’s what makes Skilling Queenslanders for Work so successful.”

“Skilling Queenslanders for Work has been producing some fantastic results with more than 24,000 people finding jobs as a direct result of participating in one of these projects.

“This year’s State Budget is all about creating more jobs for Queenslanders and that’s why we have invested $80 million this year as part of our $420 million investment in this successful initiative.

Brisbane Broncos Rugby League Club have received over $105,000 to provide a Certificate II in Hospitality for up to 30 young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders aged 15-19.

“The Broncos are grateful for the opportunity to help more young Queenslanders get a start in the hospitality industry and this project complements our expanding school-based programs,” said Broncos’ chief executive Paul White.

“Our highly skilled staff and Ambassadors - including Ali Brigginshaw, Scott Prince and Justin Hodges - will provide mentoring support and encouragement for young people to complete their Certificates and move into jobs.

“We are also pleased to be able to deliver the training from our new facility and provide real benefits to the community.

“We believe a real strength of this program is that participants will have the unique opportunity to train where the Broncos train.”

“The Broncos have a proven track record of delivering results through Skilling Queenslanders for Work, with 25 participants going on to get a job as a direct result of their past two projects,” Ms Fentiman said.

“We know that we will need an additional 20,000 skilled workers by 2020 in our growing hospitality industry.

“And with exciting projects planned for Queensland such as the Queens Wharf precinct, we know that participants in the Bronco’s next Skilling Queenslanders for Work project will gain a valuable qualification to find a job in Queensland’s thriving hospitality sector.”

“Skilling Queenslanders for Work projects also support a number of social enterprises that bring specialist support and employment opportunities for people who can face disadvantages when applying for work.”

The full list of projects funded through the first funding round for 2019–20 is available from www.qld.gov.au/skillingqueenslanders.
