Minster for Police and Minister for Corrective Services, the Honourable Mark Ryan MP again joined Commissioner Ian Stewart for the 2019 AIFVP Gala Dinner.

This followed an intense day of discussions and presentations and formed part of the Third Australasian Indigenous Family Violence Policing Conference.

The Queensland Police Service hosted this year’s conference.

Minister Mark Ryan said he was glad to be a part of this year’s conference.

“The meaningful discussions that have gone on here and continue to every year makes this a valuable event for all those in attendance,” Minister Ryan said.

Delegates flocked to Cairns when the conference began on June 19 to begin two days’ worth of important collaborative work and discussions to explore policing solutions to improve responses to domestic violence incidents affecting those in Indigenous communities.

Entertainment for the evening was provided by Torres Strait Islander performers the Kayn Kuap Boigu Island Dance Group and Danny Bani with his band ‘The Nightshift’.

After being in the possession of QPS since the conference last year, the Wawilak Sister ‘baton’ has now been passed on to the Western Australia Police Force, ahead of their turn to host the Fourth Australasian Indigenous Family Violence Policing Conference next year.

Commissioner Stewart re-affirmed the pride the QPS had in being able to host this year’s conference.

“It was a wonderful night and it’s an honour to have this year’s conference take part on Queensland soil,” Commissioner Stewart said.

“This has been a fantastic few days of working together and I’m glad the QPS was able to facilitate this important event for targeted discussions about domestic and family violence issues in our Indigenous communities.

“I look forward to seeing the impacts on our future the sharing of our stories at the conference will have in protecting family and keeping everyone in our communities safer.

“The QPS now looks forward to next year’s conference, hosted by the Western Australia Police.”
