Multicultural Affairs Minister Stirling Hinchliffe will visit the Toowoomba Mosque today for its Open Day and 6th Annual International Food Festival.

Mr Hinchliffe said the Palaszczuk Government was providing practical support to the event with a $6,000 grant from the Celebrating Multicultural Queensland program.

“The International Food Festival is now into its sixth year and that’s a great sign that the local community is getting right behind this event,” he said.

“Events like this help to create a sense of belonging and break down barriers between people from different faiths and cultures.

“The Toowoomba community is built on inclusion and has embraced the benefits multiculturalism is delivering in the region.

“Today’s festival is a great opportunity for Toowoomba residents to continue to build friendships and get to know their local Muslim neighbours.

“It’s also a great chance to share food, faith and friendship from people of many nations.”

Prof Shahjahan Khan, the founding President of the Islamic Society of Toowoomba, thanked the Queensland Government for funds from Celebrating Multicultural Queensland to run the event.

“It is through festivals like this that we can bring everyone together to help create a diverse and harmonious community for people of all backgrounds,” Mr Khan said.

“I would especially like to thank my Toowoomba friends who kindly placed flowers and messages of support at the gates of the Mosque in recent weeks.

“I look forward to seeing you all at the Mosque open day and International Food Festival.”
