Help protect Queensland from biosecurity threats

Communities, businesses and industries are invited to nominate for membership of the Biosecurity Queensland Ministerial Advisory Committee, which will help to guide Queensland’s statewide biosecurity systems and protections.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said future biosecurity leaders were needed to ensure the goals set by the Queensland Biosecurity Strategy 2018 – 2023 were met.

“We are seeking expressions of interest from people with a commitment to upholding our biosecurity systems and representing Queensland perspectives in national discussions around how to best guard us against plant and animal pests and diseases and also invasive plants and animals,” Mr Furner said.

“The vision for the advisory group is that each of the plant, animal, and pest sectors will be represented.

“As well as agricultural industry, environmental and scientific nominees, we are also looking for people with skills in information technology, or social science. This is in recognition that biosecurity practices are broadening.

“People shouldn’t feel intimidated or unqualified if they haven’t served on a council or board before.

“We are specifically looking to identify tomorrow’s up and coming leaders, not just those who are leading today. We’d especially like to hear from those who work in areas of potential biosecurity risk such as transport, importing and ports.”

The Biosecurity Queensland Ministerial Advisory Committee will have 10 members, including a chairperson.

Applicants should have demonstrated experience in areas such as:

    • policy development
    • biosecurity investment/risk/economics
    • social or behavioural science
    • biosecurity intelligence and data gathering
    • research and development
    • biodiversity and/or bush regeneration.

Nominations are due by 10 May 2019 and must have the full support of the person’s employer, sponsoring industry or community group.
