Global demand goes nuts for Queensland macadamias

Support and research from the Queensland Government is helping Wide Bay-Burnett macadamia farmers meet increasing global demand for the renowned local nut.

Member for Maryborough Bruce Saunders said the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries’ annual benchmark report is helping growers identify the best practices to increase yield and boost productivity.

“The report provides growers with confidential information that compares their business to others based on region, farm size and orchard age,” Mr Saunders said.

“The report also highlights seasonal and long-term trends in the sector, so that growers can make informed choices about what they can do to improve production to meet growing global demand for macadamias.

“The department’s valuable research also helps grow the industry through new variety selections and better pest and disease management techniques.”

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said despite the crippling drought, Queensland’s macadamia industry is performing strongly.

“The Palaszczuk Government is investing in agricultural research to help Queensland farmers take on the world,” Mr Furner said.

 “The Gross Value of Production for the 2019-20 season is forecast to be $147 million, about 17 per cent greater than the average for the last five years.

“Global demand for our macadamias remains strong, with Japan, Taiwan, Europe and the United States all increasing Australian imports.

“We’re seeing more macadamia trees being planted and more land sought for plantations.

“We know many Queensland farmers are doing it tough, but they are also innovating and exploring every opportunity and enhancing our state’s reputation around the world as growers of top-quality produce.

“We have a lot of agricultural research going on, like this report and that is focused on helping our farmers be more sustainable and more profitable.”
