Queensland to deliver missing link for our young learners

A free pre-kindy learning program for three-year-old children will be rolled out in selected Queensland state schools in 2020.

Education Minister Grace Grace said the $2.2 million KindyLinQ pilot program will be launched and trialled across 40 schools next year, supporting many youngsters in their transition to kindy and then into Prep.

“For many, Kindy can initially be a daunting step-up and we want all our children to get a great start,” Ms Grace said.

“This 12-month, specially designed program will really help some of our very young Queenslanders develop the essential basic skills needed and get ready for school.

“KindyLinQ will act as a soft entry to kindy, encouraging parents and caregivers to actively participate in these play-based learning sessions with their child. 

“We want families to access this fantastic program to build their confidence as their child’s first teacher and giving them vital tips that they can use at home.

“The trial will be free for families in the selected priority locations, with many benefits gained extending beyond the school gate.”

“The school principal, a qualified teacher and early years support coordinator would lead KindyLinQ sessions which will involve at least six hours a week, offering indoor and outdoor play experiences, shared storytelling, music and rhymes.

“Parents can self-select to access the program by contacting the school and registering their child.”

The first 25 Queensland state schools to offer KindyLinQ in 2020 include:

  • Sandy Strait SS
  • Silkstone SS
  • Torquay SS
  • Urangan Point SS
  • Yarrabilba SS

An extra 15 schools are expected to be added to the program pilot during the 2020 school year.
