The new Inner-City South State Secondary College in Dutton Park is one step closer to completion, following the announcement of the successful construction contractor.
Deputy Premier and South Brisbane MP Jackie Trad and Education Minister Grace Grace today announced Broad Construction as the contractor set to bring stage 1 of the new secondary college to life.
“This is a really exciting step towards getting our new college ready for the first Year 7 students to walk through the door in 2021,” Ms Trad said.
“The College will be the first high school built in Brisbane’s inner-south in 60 years.
“Today is an important milestone in a journey that goes right through to the first day of school in 2021.”
“I am sure the families in our local community will be as thrilled as I am to see the progress on site and I invite them to get involved as we count down the days to the doors opening.”
Education Minister Grace Grace said the $130 million school was an investment in jobs and local children.
“The Palaszczuk Government is continuing to invest in education because it gives the leaders of tomorrow the best start in life,” Ms Grace said.
“It also helps support local employment, with more than 400 jobs expected to be generated here at the Inner City South State Secondary College through construction.
“By the end of the year, the project will take to the skies when the tower crane is installed ready to bring the six main buildings out of the ground.
“Eventually, the school will be able to cater for up to 1,650 students in years 7-12.”
Foundation Principal Kirsten Ferdinands welcomed the announcement of the construction contractor.
“Today is an exciting milestone for the new secondary college and I am looking forward to watching the site transform into an innovative and contemporary learning facility,” Ms Ferdinands said.
“The buildings provide a foundation for the school, and as the buildings begin to come out of the ground, I will be working with the community on building the other important elements such as the values, name and philosophy.
“It is full steam ahead towards January 2021, when we get to welcome our first Year 7 students into the brand new, modern facilities to start their high school journey.”
Information will be provided to the nearby residents to keep them up-to-date on the construction progress.
The school will feature a creative hub and administration hub, two learning hubs, a health and wellbeing hub, multipurpose hall on site.
The innovative outdoor design will see the creation of a central learning oasis, the same size as Anzac Park, and an active park.
