Weirs and waterholes topped up for border towns

Water that has been flowing for the past three weeks from Glenlyon Dam to secure supply for the border towns has now topped up Boggabilla Weir and Yelarbon’s waterhole.

Natural Resources Minister, Dr Anthony Lynham said during this controlled release an additional 2000 megalitres on top of the scheduled 12,800 megalitres was released to ensure the storages were adequately topped up.

“More than 14,000 megalitres water has been on a 220-kilometre journey over the past three weeks, safeguarding the supply for more than 7000 residents in Goondiwindi, Boggabilla, Yelarbon and Texas,” Dr Lynham said.

“Now that Boggabilla Weir and Yelarbon’s waterhole are full, residents of border towns can have enhanced confidence in their water supply over summer.

“The dry riverbed has also quenched its thirst, and waterholes, stock and domestic supplies for landholders along the river also received a much-needed top-up.”

Goondiwindi Regional Council Mayor Graeme Scheu said the Queensland and NSW Government had done a remarkable job in supplying the recent release to the Boggabilla Weir but it will not last forever and there was no water for additional releases.

“Council is currently arranging for a public awareness campaign to ensure all members of the community are fully informed of any upcoming water restrictions and to suggest ways to work together,” Cr Scheu said.

“We are all in this together and will have to accept compromise for the good of all.”
