Fitzgerald Constructions Australia to build Neville Bonner bridge

Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones has today announced Fitzgerald Constructions Australia would build the Neville Bonner bridge.

Ms Jones said the bridge – named in honour of Australia’s first Indigenous parliamentarian – would connect the CBD with South Bank.

“We’re partnering with the private sector to deliver projects that create thousands of jobs here in Queensland,” she said.

“This bridge will connect South Bank with the new retail and dining precinct at Queen’s Wharf in Brisbane’s CBD.

“Not only will this project create thousands of new jobs, by having better connectivity, we’re ensuring strong flow-on benefits for businesses throughout the city.”

Fitzgerald Constructions Australia is a specialist marine works and bridge-building company. Their recent achievements include internationally recognised Seafarers and Jim Stynes Bridges in Melbourne and the new road bridge at The Star Gold Coast.

Ms Jones said the latest designs of Brisbane’s first pedestrian bridge in a decade were sleek, slender and stylish. 

“Today’s announcement is another significant milestone in the Queen’s Wharf project,” she said.

“Queen’s Wharf will change the face of Brisbane – creating more than 8000 jobs in Brisbane’s CBD over the next 10 years.

“We thank Destination Brisbane Consortium for its continued engagement with Traditional Owners and especially with the Bonner family to honour their late grandfather and granduncle.”

Senator Bonner was the first Indigenous Australian to become a member of the Commonwealth Parliament. He was initially appointed to fill a casual Senate vacancy in 1971 and serviced until 1983. In 1979 he was named Australian of the Year.

DBC advise that while the contract is subject to approvals initial works are planned to start around March (2020).

It will take around 24 months to complete and cross over the top of the Riverside Expressway. 

The Queen’s Wharf Brisbane development is being delivered by Destination Brisbane Consortium – a joint venture of the The Star Entertainment Group and Hong Kong-based partners, Chow Tai Fook Enterprises and Far East Consortium. 

QWB will feature four new luxury hotels, 2000 residential apartments and the equivalent of 12 football fields of public space.
