Leaders of tomorrow take over Queensland Parliament

The 24^th YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament is now in session.

Young people representing each of the state’s 93 electorates have gathered at Queensland Parliament House to debate Youth Bills and raise important issues.

Minister for Youth Di Farmer welcomed the youth representatives as they took their seats at today’s opening ceremony.

“Youth Parliament is a fantastic opportunity for the next generation of Queensland leaders to learn real leadership skills,” Ms Farmer said.

“They will be able to see how Parliament works first-hand and build networks they can take with them in to their working lives.

“Each young member is following in the footsteps of equally fearless and inspiring young people who have gone before them, many of whom have achieved significant success.

“Democracy and community participation are important Queensland values – and it’s fantastic to see so many young Queenslanders ready to put them in to action.”

Ms Farmer said Youth Parliament gave the next generation of Queensland leaders a platform to highlight the issues important to them.

“In the past, we’ve heard young people speak passionately about topics as diverse as farming, drought, women’s health, and LGBTQIA+ issues,” she said.

“It’s a privilege to hear your concerns and take them on board as we try to build a better Queensland.

“I especially look forward to hearing from my counterpart, the Young Member for Bulimba Isabelle Chapman.

“Congratulations to all of this year’s participants – I’m sure we have a lot to learn from you.”

Ms Farmer said after nearly 25 years the YCMA Youth Parliament remained an important institution to empower young people.

“We’ve seen a record number of nominations this year, with 357 young people putting their hands up to take part,” Ms Farmer said.

“That’s why the Palaszczuk Government has contributed funding of more than $67,000 this year.

“We’re proud to partner with the YMCA and Queensland Parliamentary Services to deliver such a valuable program.”
