State funds to strengthen Scenic Rim road network

The Palaszczuk Government has committed more than $82,000 to Scenic Rim Regional Council to safeguard Sarabah Road and ensure greater resilience and functionality during heavy rainfall.

Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Cameron Dick said the funding would be used to extend the length of Sarabah causeway, providing an alternative path for excess water.

“The Scenic Rim is located within the headwaters of three main river catchments, and Sarabah Road in particular is prone to flooding during significant weather events,” Mr Dick said.

“The proposed works on Sarabah Road will see the existing causeway extended by 64 metres, allowing water to escape away from the road.

“These works will help to reduce the risk of erosion on the road following significant rainfall and will allow the road to reopen sooner.

“Building resilient and functional infrastructure as soon as possible following severe weather events helps communities recover faster.”

Sarabah Road is recognised as an critical link for surrounding tourism facilities, including Spring Gully Stays accommodation at the foot of Lamington National Park.

“Scenic Rim Regional Council have identified Sarabah Road as a priority project for the region, and the Palaszczuk Government is happy to contribute $82,000 so council can complete these works," Mr Dick said.

“The upgrade will allow the road to be accessible during minor weather disruptions and will reduce the amount of time the road is closed during heavy rainfall.

“A key priority of our government is keeping communities safe, and the funding allocated to Scenic Rim Regional Council for this project shows we’re delivering on that commitment.

“We will continue to help Queenslanders prepare for, respond to and recover from disaster as part of the Queensland Strategy for Disaster Resilience, as we work towards making Queensland the most disaster-resilient state in Australia.”
