Water security boost for Emerald irrigators

Irrigators in the Emerald region will reap the benefits of an $11.7 million upgrade to the Selma Main Channel system providing a much-needed boost in water supply security.

Acting Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy Mark Furner, who visited Emerald today, said SunWater had commenced works, with early planning, design and testing completed.

“The Palaszczuk Government is making our existing water infrastructure work better for the benefit of all Queenslanders, and we’re supporting new projects with the potential to boost regional economies.

“This investment supports re-lining of a 34-kilometre section of the Selma Main Channel system to significantly reduce water lost during transport and provide additional water for local farmers,’’ Mr Furner said.

“The project will make, on average, an extra 6400ML of water available for end users such as farmers in the Emerald area to irrigate their cotton, citrus and grain crops.

“This investment will drive productivity, provide greater security and provide more water for Emerald irrigators.

“SunWater is already mobilised to deliver this project that will help future proof this vital irrigation area.

“In Queensland we have more than 400 dams, weirs and barrages which will contribute to economic growth and industry for many years to come.’’

The $11.7 million project which is being jointly funded through an investment of $8.7 million from SunWater and a commitment of $3 million under the Australian Government’s National Water Infrastructure Development Fund.
