Applications open for mediation training scholarship

Applications are open for the Jack Cranstoun mediation training scholarship, named after the much-loved Dispute Resolution Branch member who lost his life suddenly in October 2014.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Yvette D’Ath said the scholarship, established in 2015 in honour of Jack, offered four young people the opportunity to be trained in mediation and assessed for National Mediator Accreditation.

“Mediators perform a vital role in our community by helping people resolve disputes and reach a mutually agreed solution without going to court,” she said.

“Mediation can be used for a wide range of disputes, such as those involving tradespeople, privacy, noise, trees, the family and pets.

“This scholarship provides four young Queenslanders with the invaluable opportunity to work with experienced mediators and gain the skills and knowledge needed to start their career in mediation.”

Applications for the scholarship are sought from young people aged between 21 and 30.

The scholarship panel is seeking applicants with: excellent communication skills; experience working as a volunteer with a community service or charity; an undergraduate degree (or nearing completion) in arts, law, counselling, peace and conflict studies, business or similar; enthusiasm to continually learn; and good character that can be verified by two referees.

To apply for this year’s scholarship, applicants are asked to provide a two page response to the attributes listed above with specific examples of their experience, a one-page resume and details of two referees.

Shortlisted applicants will be contacted and invited to a panel interview.

Applications are to be emailed to trainingdrb@justice.qld.gov.au by 11 February 2019.
