Mental Health development for Logan Hospital Emergency

An emergency department expansion for mental health patients at Logan Hospital announced by the State Government today will provide a dedicated space for patients and free up capacity.

Health Minister Steven Miles said the State Government was investing $1.5M for the construction of the space within the existing courtyard of the Emergency Department.

“This is an important initiative and one we have been working on with the leadership of the Logan Hospital Emergency Department for some time,” the Minister said.

“The Hospital’s location in one of Queensland’s largest growth corridors means demand for health services, including mental health will continue to grow. This dedicated space will enable mental health workers to deliver appropriate, safe and personalised treatment for patients who present to the Emergency Departmentexperiencing a mental health crisis.”

“This is great news for patients of Logan HospitalEmergency as it will also take some load off the rest of the Emergency Department." 

Minister Miles said the dramatic population growth in the Logan area meant that expansion of the hospital was necessary to meet demand.  

“This is why we are investing $280M to expand Logan Hospital with a detailed design phase already underway,with a view to commence construction from next year," he said. 

“This was an election commitment by the Laborgovernment to expand bed capacity at Logan Hospital and we are delivering on that. I commend the doctors and nurses at Logan, and in fact across Metro South Health, who are doing a fantastic job."

The Mental Health Clinical Decision Unit development at Logan Hospital will undergo tender, design and build as soon as possible, with a view to operational commencement by the end of this year or early 2020.
