Have your say on the future of VET in Queensland

Queenslanders are invited to have their say on how vocational education and training (VET) can remain responsive and ensure workers have the skills needed for the jobs of the future.

The Minister for Employment and Small Business and Minister for Training and Skills Development Shannon Fentiman today released a discussion paper Skills for Queensland which seeks feedback on how to shape a modern, flexible and adaptive skills system in Queensland.

“The Palaszczuk Government’s number one priority is creating jobs and helping more Queenslanders gain the skills they need to participate in a growing economy.

“VET plays a vital role in delivering the training and skills needed by Queensland industry and employers to fill those priority jobs across a wide range of occupations and trades.”

“Vocational Education and Training delivers real results for Queenslanders and has a proven track record with 85% of graduates getting a job or going onto further study.

“We understand the importance of providing quality training and that’s why we’ve recently announced free tafe for all year 12 graduates in Queensland with 160 qualifications available to meet the needs of growing industries.”

Ms Fentiman said that our investment in training needs to consider fast growing industries and the occupations likely to develop in the future.

“We want Queenslanders to have their say on how we can ensure we have job-ready graduates in growth sectors and occupations, and at the same time ensure Queensland makes the most effective use of the state’s VET investment.

“Whether you are an employer or small business needing an apprentice or trainee, we want to know how VET can deliver the opportunities to help your sector or business grow.

“The jobs of tomorrow will require more workers with the technical skills to keep up with the rapid changes in technology and automation.

“We need to ensure the VET system is anticipating these changes and growing in areas that are of greatest need to industry, workplaces and regions right across the state.

“We also want to hear from business, industry and employers, as well as students and families about how we can encourage more people to make VET their pathway into employment.

“Providing feedback will help us to ensure all Queenslanders have the right skills and training to secure sustainable employment for their future.”
