Capricorn Highway planning study to guide future transport needs in Emerald

Progress has been made on a planning study to review transport operations on the Capricorn Highway between Codenwarra Road and Opal Street, Emerald.

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey said the study would guide future transport needs and investment opportunities for the Capricorn Highway at Emerald.

“We are committed to future transport planning across the state and this study will inform the transport needs on the Capricorn Highway in Central Queensland,” Mr Bailey said.

“It will review infrastructure needs, traffic capacity, pedestrian facilities and general safety improvements like road signs and traffic calming.”

Mr Bailey said the Queensland Government also supported council investigation of options to mitigate Emerald flooding.

“With council’s decision to not progress with flood levees, the planning study will consider a new high-level bridge over the Nogoa River,” Mr Bailey said.

“It is a priority for this government to ensure we work with local councils and take a coordinated approach to addressing local community matters.

“This project will strengthen and enhance the existing relationship we have with the Central Highlands Regional Council.

“It will ensure our agencies deliver key outcomes for the community.”

Central Highlands Regional Council Mayor Kerry Hayes said the planning study supported the work council had been doing to progress flood mitigation options.

The first stage of the planning study to develop a preferred option is expected to be completed in November 2018.
