Queensland has reached an important milestone in the rollout of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), with more than 20,000 Queenslanders with disability now signed up to the scheme.

Minister for Disability Services Coralee O’Rourke said she was pleased with the progress being made across the state, with the number of participants steadily increasing.

“It’s an exciting time right now, as we’ve entered into the third year of the NDIS rollout across Queensland – and this is the biggest year yet,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

“More than 3000 people across the south-east, Fraser Coast and far north regions joined the NDIS within the first month of the rollout in these areas.

“In Brisbane alone, sign-ups exceeded 1500 from 1 July to 1 August 2018.

“This is an outstanding effort, and I’m pleased these numbers are continuing to grow.”

Mrs O’Rourke said NDIS participants had the ability to choose their supports, and determine whether they would prefer to self-manage funding or have the funding managed on their behalf.

“We want to be sure that all eligible Queenslanders are aware of how the NDIS can benefit them,” she said

“The Palaszczuk Government is working hard to ensure Queenslanders with disability are supported to join the NDIS and have access to support during the transition to the NDIS.

“For most Queenslanders, a Local Area Coordinator who works for a partner organisation will be the main contact point for the NDIS,” she said.

“There are many NDIS partner organisations within the community, which can be found on the NDIS website.

“The Queenslanders with Disability Network is also a great way to access peer support during the transition.”
