Community-led proposals welcomed on youth crime issues

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has welcomed the Townsville community’s continued feedback and ideas on how to reduce youth crime and improve public safety.

The Premier has today met with Major General Stuart Smith (ret.), who was appointed as the independent Townsville Community Champion on youth crime issues to facilitate community-led solutions.

Over the past six months, Mr Smith has held extensive consultations with individuals and organisations, including a June public forum and a July workshop with non-government and government service providers who work in youth development and youth justice.

“I’m grateful for the feedback and ideas that so many Townsville residents have provided,” the Premier said.

“The June workshop with service providers also enabled Mr Smith to share the consistent themes and messages from the public with organisations that work on the frontline, and to tap into their extensive experience and knowledge about how best to address youth crime.

“I can assure Townsville that my government is listening carefully to the messages being relayed by Mr Smith as an independent voice for the community.

“Everyone is entitled to be safe, and it’s important we hear views from right across the city on this issue.”

To progress broad solutions proposed by the community, Mr Smith will also hold a forum with Townsville community leaders in August.

The Premier said the government is considering Mr Smith’s interim recommendations made to date, and that Mr Smith was regularly updating local state government MPs and the Premier on his consultations.

Mr Smith’s recommendations will be considered as part of the development of the recently announced Youth Justice Strategy, which will also be informed by the recommendations made in the recent report on youth justice by former Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson.

“I look forward to continuing to hear the outcomes from Mr Smith’s consultations with the community,” said the Premier.

“I value the collaborative approach that’s being taken, and believe it will deliver positive outcomes for Townsville to ensure it’s a vibrant and liveable city.”

Mr Smith is scheduled to deliver his final report in January 2019.
