Safety boost for Sunshine Motorway

Works worth $1.5 million to boost safety on the Sunshine Motorway will soon start near the overpass north of Mooloolah River.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said several crashes had occurred on this section during the past 10 years, including one recorded fatality.

“Increasing the safety of motorists is a key objective of the Palaszczuk Government, which is why we are investing in improving the Sunshine Motorway,” Mr Bailey said.

“We are committed to building and maintaining safer roads.

“This section of the Sunshine Motorway carries large volumes of traffic and these works will deliver a high-benefit, cost-effective safety treatment to reduce the potential for crashes.”

Mr Bailey said the works would improve travel time for emergency vehicles.

“They will include installing safety barriers and a cross-over point for paramedics, police and fire fighters travelling to and from incidents,” he said.

“These barriers will provide greater separation between vehicles travelling in opposite directions, reducing the severity of crashes where people are run off the road, as well as the potential for head-on crashes.

“Construction is expected to start in September this year, weather permitting.”

The $1.5 million project is funded under the Palaszczuk Government’s Targeted Road Safety Program, which aims to improve road safety and focuses on implementing high-benefit, cost-effective solutions to prevent crashes and incidents on Queensland roads.
