Grant funding to give disability community events a boost

Events celebrating Queenslanders with disability and promoting inclusion have been given a welcome boost by the Palaszczuk Government, with the announcement of the successful recipients for this year’s Disability Community Event grants program.

Funding will be provided to 39 not-for-profit and community organisations across the state to hold events and activities during Disability Action Week (9–16 September) and on International Day of People with Disability (3 December) in Queensland.

Announcing the successful recipients of the Palaszczuk Government grants, Minister for Disability Services Coralee O’Rourke congratulated all the organisations that put forward their event ideas.

“Through the Disability Community Event grants program, we will provide a total of $150,000 to 39 not-for-profit and community organisations across Queensland to host their events and activities in 2018,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

“From a Disability Surfing Day at Yeppoon to a Day in the Bay event at Hervey Bay, these events and activities have inclusion and disability awareness at their heart.”

“I’m pleased to see a number of events in regional Queensland are receiving this funding, including a Charleville arts festival and a picnic day on Thursday Island, providing a great boost for people with disability in those regions.”

Disability Action Week aims to empower people with disability, raise awareness of disability issues, and improve access and inclusion throughout the wider community.

“Disability Action Week and International Day of People with Disability are two of the biggest celebrations of Queenslanders with disability and it pleases me to see so many events and activities on offer to celebrate in 2018,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

“I encourage all Queenslanders to get involved in the events this year, and to get behind the goal of raising awareness and creating inclusive communities for all Queenslanders.

“Supporting community and not-for-profit groups to hosts these events is part of the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to the All Abilities Queensland: Opportunities for All state disability plan.”
