More than 130 Queensland primary school students are competing at the inaugural Hockey Queensland Remote and Indigenous State Championships on the Gold Coast this week.

Member for Gaven Meaghan Scanlon said the event was a great legacy from the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

“We invested $65,0000 Games legacy funding to support this event,” Ms Scanlon said.

“Students will compete at the Gold Coast Hockey Centre which just a few months ago hosted the Games hockey tournament, which will inspire and motivate these young athletes.

“The Palaszczuk Government delivered a $16 million upgrade at the Gold Coast Hockey Centre ahead of the Games.

“We continue to invest in youth and community sport and we are proud to support young hockey players.

Ms Scanlon said last year we invited state sporting organisations which delivered sports featured at the Games to apply for Embracing 2018 Sports Grants.”

“The Games have provided an incredible opportunity to inspire Queenslanders to lead healthier and active lifestyles and encourage participation in sport around the state.

“This week we celebrate NAIDOC Week and I congratulate Hockey Queensland on the delivery of this innovative tournament enabling young people from remote and Indigenous communities to play at the hockey venue for the Games.”

Hockey Queensland’s Acting CEO, Sue McLatchey said, “We are thrilled the Remote and Indigenous Hockey program has been extended to include the Commonwealth Games Legacy Program, with participants from across Queensland coming together to compete at the first RIHP State Championships,” she said.

“We thank the Queensland Government for their financial support and the Preston Campbell Foundation for their enthusiasm to support the off-field program of cultural activities.”

The Embracing 2018 Sports Grants program is funded by the Australian Government, through the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games’ Embracing 2018 Legacy Program.
