Construction begins on second Costco site

Costco’s second Queensland outlet at Bundamba is officially underway with around 280 permanent and other casual operational jobs on the company’s shopping list.

Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Cameron Dick said the ongoing jobs, as well as the 90 construction jobs and supply chain opportunities during construction, would be a huge boost for Ipswich.

“This $50 million project involving 90 construction jobs and 280 full-time and casual operational jobs will have a profound impact on Ipswich, which we know is struggling with unemployment,” Mr Dick said.

“The Palaszczuk Government is intent on creating the right business conditions to attract and stimulate private investment projects like this one that bring jobs and economic opportunities to Queensland.

“My department, through our SEQ West Regional Office, assisted Costco in its decision-making for its second site selection by providing data and information, and managed and coordinated the state approval process for the development application.

“With the support of our government, Costco then selected Ipswich due to its proximity to a large population base that serves the Ipswich region, western suburbs of Brisbane, northern Gold Coast, Logan and the Toowoomba region.

“Costco’s 6.5 hectare site will include a 14,000 square metre warehouse and parking facilities, and will be another welcomed addition to the $1 billion Citiswich Business Park.”

Member for Bundamba Jo-Ann Miller welcomed the new Costco for her local community.

“More competition is always welcome in my local community, and the full-time and casual jobs on offer will provide opportunities for residents,” she said.

“When the doors open in December 2018, it will be a great day for fans of Costco, and will represent a bright future for locals looking to take up full-time or casual work.”

Costco Australia CEO Patrick Noone said the company sees Ipswich as an exciting opportunity.

“We look forward to hiring locals and engaging local business, both as a supplier to small business and a platform to showcase local products,” he said.

Costco is a United States-based retailer with warehouse operations in eight countries. Queensland’s first Costco opened at North Lakes in 2014.
