Busy Gold Coast intersection targeted for safety improvements

A $961,000 safety project at the intersection of Smith Street Connection Road (North Street) and Scarborough Street will begin in the coming months. 

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said works would improve safety at the busy Southport intersection. 

‘‘We know this particular section of road has been identified as a major east to west corridor,’’ Mr Bailey said. 

“By upgrading the existing pedestrian amenities, this work will create safer road crossing for all users. 

‘‘The works will also increase safety of off-road cyclists, pram users and those with mobility difficulties. 

“Other improvements will include kerb enhancements, removal and relocation of centre median islands and linemarking to provide better connectivity and visibility.”           

Mr Bailey said the existing traffic signal facilities and road lighting would be upgraded to assist with the right-turn movements from Scarborough Street into North Street. 

‘‘The safety of all road users is our number one priority and these traffic signal and lighting changes aim to minimise the risk of crashes at this location,’’ Mr Bailey said. 

“We always ensure works have as little impact as possible on the local environment and these will involve minimal roadside tree clearing. 

“The project is expected to be complete in December 2018 and we ask motorists to pay attention to changing traffic conditions and speed limits while works are underway.’’ 

These works are funded under the State Government’s Targeted Road Safety Program.
