Minister for Fire and Emergency Services
The Honourable Craig Crawford

Cairns-based company H C Building and Construction has secured a $2.7 million contract to build Horn Island’s new Rural Fire Station and State Emergency Services facility, Fire and Emergency Services Minister Craig Crawford said today (Thursday).

Mr Crawford said the project is likely to support as many as 50 jobs in the region.

“Every Queenslander deserves access to essential services, and workers in these frontline services deserve quality facilities,” Mr Crawford said.

“Construction of this essential infrastructure provides a strong pipeline of construction work in the regions, supporting jobs in Far North Queensland.

“And by ensuring our firefighters and SES volunteers have the facilities they need to get the job done, we’re making Queensland communities safer,” he said.

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said the project was “good news all round - for builders, electricians, plumbers, labourers and apprentices, and for the residents of Horn Island”.

“The combined facility on Horn Island will support the community during severe weather events,” Ms Lui said.

“A combined facility will provide the area with a first-class emergency response and continue to meet the needs of the community for years to come.

“It will feature office spaces, a meeting room, kitchenette, bathroom and space for four emergency vehicles,” she said.

The project is expected to be completed in December 2018. For further information on how to become registered for Queensland Government building and construction work, phone 3008 3392 or visit www.qld.gov.au/gov/building-services
