Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones has today revealed all Gold Coast Commonwealth Games venues are fully booked for the rest of 2018.

Ms Jones said booking hours at newly constructed and upgraded Games venues on the Coast would double from 25,779 in 2017-18 to 51,561 in 2018-19.

“Thirty-two of the 102 events and functions booked for Gold Coast venues up until December this year are of national or international significance,” she said.

“This is a great result for the Coast and proves the more than $300 million we invested in venue infrastructure for the Games is already paying off.

“We bid for the Games because we wanted to strengthen the Gold Coast’s reputation as a major events destination.

“We’ve had unprecedented interest from sporting organisations around the world, keen to bring events to the Coast.

“We’ll continue to leverage the Commonwealth Games to secure events to ensure taxpayers are getting value for money out of this great event.”

Events include:

  • Australian transplant Games (Gold Coast Aquatic Centre)
  • UniSport Nationals (Gold Coast Aquatic Centre)
  • Mountain Bike Australia National Series rounds three and four (Gold Coast Cycle Centre)
  • Kokoda Challenge (Gold Coast Cycle Centre)
  • Netball – Firebirds versus Vixens (Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre)
  • Judo National Titles (Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre)
  • Gymnastics Australia Queensland Championships (Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre)
  • Netball - Vicky Wilson Cup (Coomera Indoor Sports Centre)
  • Squash – Australian Club Championships (Carrara Indoor Sports Stadium)

Assistant Tourism Industry Development Minister and Member for Gaven Meaghan Scanlon said before the Games began, the Gold Coast had already hosted 129 events and 35 training camps in new venues.

“The Commonwealth Games proved to the world that the Gold Coast is one of the best destinations to host sport in the world,” she said.

“We have state-of-the-art venues in one of the most sought-after tourism destinations on the planet – it only makes sense that people want to come here to play sport.

“The investment in the Commonwealth Games just goes to show it’s only a Labor government that will take Gold Coasters seriously.”
