JOINT STATEMENT

Minister for Transport and Main Roads
The Honourable Mark Bailey

Assistant Minister for State Development
Mrs Julieanne Gilbert

Community consultation will start soon to look at ways to improve safety at the Sydney and Victoria Street intersection, while resurfacing works are due to kick-off in June.

The intersection has a history of crashes, predominately as motorists turn right from Sydney Street into Victoria Street.

Member for Mackay and Assistant Minister for State Development Julieanne Gilbert said the Mackay CBD intersection was identified under the state-funded Safer Roads Sooner Program to reduce the risk of crashes and ease congestion on Sydney Street.

“I’m thrilled to see that Transport and Main Roads listened to my call to bring forward this vital resurfacing work, which will now commence in June,” Ms Gilbert said

“I’m also pleased to see there will be further consultation regarding the configuration of turns from this intersection.

“The community and surrounding businesses will have the opportunity to have their say on the project, and help inform the decision-making process.

“In particular, we are looking for feedback from those who travel through the intersection frequently, and, of course, businesses in the CBD area.

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey said $850,000 would also be injected into resurfacing Sydney Street, between Gordon Street and River Street, with work starting next month.

“The resurfacing works are being undertaken as part of the state-funded asphalt program,” Mr Bailey said.

“The works will take place at night to minimise impacts on motorists and businesses.

“TMR representatives have been in contact with businesses which operate at night. This will ensure any impacts are minimised as much as possible.”
