Minister for Transport and Main Roads
The Honourable Mark Bailey

All foundation and piling works have been completed on the second Vines Creek bridge as the $28 million Bridges Replacement Project takes shape.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the Palaszczuk Government-funded project was progressing well and was fast-tracked as part of the Queensland Government’s Accelerated Works Program.

“Construction is currently continuing on the bridge headstocks and abutments, which make up the bridge’s substructure,” he said.

“Once this is completed, the superstructure consisting of the bridge deck, kerb, guardrails and surfacing will be built.

“Works on the second bridge also tie-in with the completion of the Mackay Regional Council levee wall which will provide an additional one-metre storm protection.”

Member for Mackay Julieanne Gilbert said the two new bridges for the Vines Creek crossing on Mackay-Slade Point Road significantly improved access for heavy vehicles to Mackay Port.

“This link to the Mackay Port was already improved with the opening of the first new bridge ahead of schedule in February,” she said.

“Built to accommodate an increased mass, the new bridge extended the Higher Mass Limit route over Vines Creek for the first time.

“The Higher Mass Limit route allows certain vehicles to travel at a higher mass, meaning less trips and more efficiency for transport operators, which is good news for the local economy.

“The benefits to freight efficiency will increase further when the second bridge is completed and double lane access is reinstated across Vines Creek.

“This project is a win for Mackay locals on several fronts - not only is this great news for truckies and motorists generally, it’s also fantastic news for our region’s economy.

“An average of 42 direct jobs are being supported over the life of the project.

“It shows the Palaszczuk Government is invested in improving our region for residents in the short and long term.”
