Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries
The Honourable Mark Furner

Experienced fisheries stakeholders are invited to nominate to join two new fishery working groups to help deliver world-class fisheries management in Queensland.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said applications are now open for membership of the new Moreton Bay and Rocky Reef fishery working groups.

“This is an exciting opportunity to be part of the most significant reform of fisheries management in Queensland’s history through the Sustainable Fisheries Strategy 2017-2027,” Mr Furner said.

“Working group members are appointed by Fisheries Queensland to provide advice on the operational aspects of a fishery or region.

“The priority for the new Moreton Bay Working Group will be looking at options for fishing rules specific to the region as part of a regional management trial.”

“The Rocky Reef fishery working group will help develop harvest strategies for key southern Queensland species including snapper, pearl perch and teraglin jew.”

Fisheries Queensland is seeking people with knowledge from a range of sectors including recreational, commercial or Indigenous fishers, charter fishing licence holders, fishing tackle retailers, research or scientific advisors, seafood marketers and processors and conservationists.

Minister Furner said two commercial fishers and one recreational fisher in the Spanish mackerel fishery were also being sought for the combined Coral Reef Fin Fish and East Coast Spanish Mackerel fishery working group.

Expressions of interest to join the fishery working groups are open until Friday, 15 June 2018.
