Best wishes for students in NAPLAN testing

Education Minister Grace Grace has encouraged Queensland students taking part in NAPLAN (National Assessment Program — Literacy and Numeracy) this week to relax and do their best.

“NAPLAN testing will take place throughout Australia from today Tuesday 15 May,” Ms Grace said.

“I send my well wishes to the 263,000 Queensland state and non-state students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 who will be taking part in the tests this week.

“NAPLAN is one of the tools we can use for monitoring students’ progress and assessing their areas of strength and development.

“The tests can also help schools to recognise curriculum programs that are effective in improving student outcomes.

“They also assist at a system level to determine where best to target resources, so it’s important that all eligible students participate because every student counts.”

Ms Grace said parents can be confident that the great work students and teachers do every day in the classroom have prepared them well for the tests.

“Teachers work tirelessly to support the wellbeing and achievement of students, and empower them to reach their potential,” she said.

“As a result, Queensland is one of the most improved Australian jurisdictions in literacy and numeracy since the introduction of NAPLAN in 2008.”

Ms Grace thanked students for their efforts and acknowledged teachers for their work with developing children’s essential literacy and numeracy skills.

“I also thank parents, schools and the wider community for their encouragement and support,” Ms Grace said.

“NAPLAN testing encompasses reading, writing, language conventions and numeracy — skills that will benefit students for the rest of their lives.

“The test data helps governments throughout Australia channel resources and provide more targeted support.”

This year, around 15,000 students at more than 80 state and non-state schools are participating in NAPLAN Online, ahead of the scheduled full rollout by 2020.

The Education Council recently agreed to consider terms of reference for a review of NAPLAN after ten years of the tests.
