Joint statement regarding Dive and Snorkelling Death Review Panel

Any death on the reef is tragic and one too many.

We know the reef is a major drawcard for both international and domestic tourists. That is why we consulted widely with the industry last year to review the Code of Practice for the dive and snorkel industry.

It is important to note the Dive and Snorkelling Death Review Panel was a separate initiative of the Northern Coroner.

A local decision was made to disband the Dive and Snorkelling Death Review Panel. This decision was not made in consultation with the State Coroner.

The State Coroner supports the reactivation of this panel and will consult with the new Northern Coroner as she takes on responsibility for the investigation of the majority of these deaths.
