Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Annastacia Palaszczuk

The Palaszczuk Government will govern from Mackay and Whitsundays region next month, spending a week meeting with local communities and businesses, including a Cabinet and town hall meeting.

Member for Mackay, Julianne Gilbert said she was pleased the Premier had agreed to her calls to bring the Cabinet to the region during the week of 21-26 May, where the focus would be on growing jobs, strengthening frontline services and diversifying the local economy.

“The ability for so many people in our region to get face-to-face with the Premier and relevant ministers to discuss the issues that are important to them is one of the hallmarks of the Palaszczuk Government,” Ms Gilbert said.

“While our region is still feeling the impact of the end of the mining boom and the impact of Tropical Cyclone Debbie, we’re seeing promising growth in the resource, renewables and tourism sectors.

“Our strengthening economy is also being supported through the delivery of Palaszczuk Government commitments including:

  • $23 million for school upgrades including new and refurbished classrooms and replacing air conditioning;
  • $70 million being spent this year as part of the $498 million Mackay Ring Road
  • $28 million for the new Vines Creek Bridges.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said she looked forward to returning to the region.

“Spending the week in the region provides an opportunity for Ministers and I to directly meet with the local community and local businesses about what matters to them.

“This is an opportunity for my Government to hear directly from the community on local issues,” she said.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk’s Governing from the Regions have been held in Townsville, Rockhampton, Cairns, Gold Coast and Ipswich.
