Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) crews are providing the “highest level of support” for the Far North during Commonwealth Games activities, Fire and Emergency Services Minister Craig Crawford said today (Thursday).

Mr Crawford said QFES – and Cairns – will play important roles in ensuring the success of the Games, which run until April 15.

“The region is certainly well prepared to cater for an event of this magnitude,” Mr Crawford said.

“A significant amount of collaboration, coordination and reporting around maintaining public safety and ensuring minimal disruption to the local community has occurred.”

Mr Crawford said QFES personnel had been on-board since day one, undertaking extensive planning and ensuring safe environments were created for athletes, spectators, visitors and residents.

“Cairns residents should feel confident that amongst the amazing displays of arts, culture and sports, there will also be an incredible network of QFES personnel ready to support them,” he said.

Mr Crawford also visited the Festival 2018 in Cairns – an arts and cultural program running parallel to the Games, with live music, performances, activities, sports on the big screen, and food and drinks.

“Festival 2018 will be a once in a lifetime opportunity for the region, with a huge influx of residents, tourists and athletes enjoying the festivities – including myself,” Mr Crawford said.

“While I hope everyone has a great time participating in all the activities on offer, it’s also important to remember to look out for each other and listen to the emergency services personnel on the ground.

“The Cairns Esplanade will be busier than usual, and safety is always the main priority.”

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Assistant Commissioner John Bolger said the organisation was primed for the historical sporting event.

“QFES is confident that, through effective planning and quality training, our staff and volunteers are ready to provide the region with the highest level of support and response during the Games,” Mr Bolger said.

“Our top priority is the safety of residents, visitors and athletes, and I am confident our personnel, systems and strategies are indicative of this.”
