Minister for Fire and Emergency Services
The Honourable Craig Crawford

Disaster assistance has been made available to the local government areas of Cairns, Carpentaria, Cook, Croydon, Douglas, Etheridge and Hinchinbrook that were affected by Tropical Cyclone Nora in late March 2018.

Assistance is being provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA).

Minister for Law Enforcement and Cyber Security Angus Taylor, who has responsibility for Commonwealth disaster assistance, said the funding will assist in supporting response operations and to repair flood damaged assets, including local roads.

“Disaster assistance has now been made available to a total of twelve local government areas in response to the impacts of Tropical Cyclone Nora,” Mr Taylor said.

“Tropical Cyclone Nora brought heavy rainfall and flooding to the North Tropical Coast, isolating numerous communities and causing widespread damage to property and public assets.”

“This funding will also help councils with the costs of clean-up and removal of debris.”

Queensland Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Craig Crawford said this assistance demonstrated the commitment of the Commonwealth and Queensland governments to ensure communities get the assistance they need to recover.

“This extension of assistance will ensure funding is available to these seven additional local government areas so they can progress the recovery effort,” Mr Crawford said.

“We are continuing to monitor the situation and will extend assistance under the NDRRA to further affected communities as required.”
