Queensland’s international education sector continues to go from strength to strength with enrolments growing more than 10 per cent in the last year.

Tourism Industry Development Minister and Ministerial Champion for International Education Kate Jones said in the latest round of data Queensland had outperformed NSW and Victoria.

Queensland international student enrolments increased 12.5 per cent in the year to February with a total of 81,312 people opting to travel to the sunshine state for education.

“Queensland is fast becoming a powerhouse for international education and the data released today just helps to build on that reputation,” she said.

“Ensuring we have a diverse student population in our state is important when it comes to embracing new ideas. That’s why we’re committed to luring more international students to Queensland.

“It’s not surprising that more students than ever are opting to study in Queensland – we have some of the world’s best education institutions in one of the most sought-after visitor destinations on the planet.”

Ms Jones said the international education sector also helped to boost Queensland’s economy.

“International education is our second largest service export and was worth $4.13 billion last financial year,” she said.

“That’s another reason why we’re investing $25.3 million over five years in this sector.

“We’ve been working to leverage the great exposure we received throughout the Commonwealth Games to boost the international education sector.

“The fastest growing international education market in the world is the sub-continent – India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh – so it’s important we make the most of the Games to reach out to students in this region in 2018.”
