Education Minister Grace Grace has officially opened Kirwan State High School’s new $2 million undercover quadrangle.

Ms Grace said the opening of “The Quad” marked another important milestone for the school.

“I know this new facility has been a welcome addition for students, staff and parents,” Ms Grace said.

“Together with the new school hall, which is currently under construction, it marks the start of another exciting chapter in the growth and development of Kirwan State High School.

“This covered area is a massive asset for the school, providing shade and shelter for student wellbeing programs, activities supporting the school’s sports academy, full-school assemblies and events like Anzac parades.

“I understand The Quad will play an important role in the school’s end of year celebrations, with parents of senior students now being able to attend the ceremony on their last day of school.

“Construction of The Quad was funded through the Queensland Government’s Smart Schools Subsidy Scheme and the Significant Regional Infrastructure Projects Program.

“The school must be congratulated for contributing $630,000 to this project, with particular praise for the efforts of the P&C in raising $80,000 of that contribution.”

Ms Grace said the school’s new hall was expected to be completed later this year.

“The hall will incorporate two sports courts, a large commercial kitchen which hospitality students can use to cater for school events, a formal foyer, stage, makeup and change rooms, two music practice rooms and two full-size music classrooms,” she said.

Ms Grace said both of the infrastructure projects were part of the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to deliver quality education for all young Queenslanders.

“Our Government is committed to providing world-class facilities for all students,” she said.

“In 2017-18 we are delivering an infrastructure investment program across the state valued at more than $778 million.”

Kirwan State High School Principal Murray James welcomed the new additions to the school.

“Kirwan SHS is very appreciative of the funding provided by the State Government and our school P&C to deliver these projects for our school community,” Mr James said.

“It is fantastic that we now have a world class venue in which to meet for full school events and a large undercover teaching space.

“The building of The Quad and the hall provide us with increased shade and indoor spaces large enough to have full school assemblies and host various other events on our own school campus.”
