The fun and fanfare of the Commonwealth Games may have come to an end, but it’s just the beginning for two massive congestion-busting M1 upgrades.

Following preparatory work prior to the games, heavy construction will now begin on widening between Mudgeeraba and Varsity Lakes and the M1/M3 Gateway Merge.

Federal Minister for Urban Infrastructure and Cities Paul Fletcher said the upgrades would provide much-needed additional capacity on one of the busiest roads in the country.

“These vital upgrades to the M1 will reduce congestion and improve the quality of life for people in South-East Queensland, getting them home sooner and safer instead of being stuck in traffic,” Mr Fletcher said.

“These upgrades will also deliver major economic benefits and are expected to support up to 450 jobs.”

Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey said development in Logan City and on the Gold Coast over the past 10 years had seen an increase in the number of residents travelling to and from Brisbane.

‘‘This increase has resulted in the Gateway merge section of the Pacific Motorway southbound reaching its operational capacity each afternoon,’’ he said.

“The additional southbound lanes on the Pacific Motorway along with the reconfiguration of the bus entry at Eight Mile Plains bus station will help ease congestion.’’

During construction at both sites, speed limit reductions will be in place. For more information about the project, phone 07 5563 6600 or visit the TMR website.

These projects are jointly funded by the Federal and State Governments.
