Minister for Fire and Emergency Services
The Honourable Craig Crawford
Disaster assistance has been made available to the local government area of Lockhart River following the impacts of ex‑Tropical Cyclone Nora in late March 2018.
Assistance is being provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA).
Minister for Law Enforcement and Cyber Security Angus Taylor, who has responsibility for Commonwealth disaster assistance, said the funding will assist to repair damaged assets and support response operations undertaken to protect the community.
“Lockhart River received over 500 millimetres of rain as the weather system associated with ex-Tropical Cyclone Nora passed,” Mr Taylor said.
“The heavy rainfalls resulted in floods that cut off roads and isolated communities across the Shire.
“Today’s funding announcement will assist the council with costs incurred during the response phase and will also help with the considerable clean-up operations that are required.”
Queensland Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Craig Crawford said the extension of assistance demonstrated the commitment of the Commonwealth and Queensland governments to supporting disaster affected communities.
“Disaster assistance has now been made available to fourteen local government areas in response to the impacts of ex-Tropical Cyclone Nora,” Mr Crawford said.
“The Commonwealth and Queensland governments are continuing to assess the impacts from Nora and will extend assistance under the NDRRA to further affected communities as required.”
