Disaster Assistance Extended after Far North Queensland Floods Joint Release

Disaster assistance has been extended to the local government area of Douglas, which was affected by flooding in early March.

Assistance is being provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA).

Minister for Law Enforcement and Cyber Security Angus Taylor, who has responsibility for Commonwealth disaster assistance, said this assistance will enable the restoration and replacement of damaged public infrastructure.

“The floods that affected North Queensland have caused widespread damage across the region, mainly to roads,” Mr Taylor said.

“Many roads were closed because of floodwaters, which left some communities within parts of the Douglas Shire isolated.”

“The funding that is being made available to the local council will ensure repairs can get underway as soon as possible.”

Queensland Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Craig Crawford said that the joint government financial support has been activated to speed up the recovery process.

“Numerous roads across Douglas Shire were impacted by the floods, including Cape-Tribulation-Bloomfield Road, which has sustained major damage,” Mr Crawford said.

“This has had major implications for the community, who have been forced to take alternative routes, extending travel time significantly.

"Today’s announcement takes the total number of disaster activated local government areas for the north Queensland floods to six.”
