Northern motorists and boaties urged to take care in wet weather

As North and Far North Queenslanders brace for more rain, motorists are urged to check the latest road conditions by visiting www.qldtraffic.qld.gov.au, calling 13 19 40 or using the QLDTraffic app.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey urged people to drive to conditions and never drive through floodwater.

“As rain impacts roads, my message remains clear: if it’s flooded, forget it,” Mr Bailey said.

“Too many lives have been lost by people attempting to drive through flooded roads.

“It doesn’t matter what kind of car you drive, how experienced you are or how badly you need to get somewhere – you should never attempt to cross a flooded road.

“Don’t put yourself, your loved ones, emergency workers or passers-by in danger.”

Mr Bailey reminded motorists they must comply with traffic and road restriction signs, which were there for their safety.

“Please be patient and take extra care on the roads,” he said.

“Slow down if you’re driving in wet weather and turn your headlights on if necessary.”

While the rain has been great for the region’s dams, and many boaties will likely be eager to get out and enjoy the water as soon as the sky clears, Mr Bailey urged them to be careful.

“The torrential rain has brought down trees across the north, so there will be a lot of debris in the water,” he said.

“Please consider local conditions and check with local authorities before setting out.”
