The Honourable Dr Anthony Lynham

More than 11,500 Queensland households are receiving cash rebates of up to $300 as a reward for buying an energy efficient appliance.

Energy Minister Dr Anthony Lynham told Parliament today that nearly $3 million worth of rebates was already going into bank accounts, out of $20 million set aside for the scheme.

Dr Lynham said demand for the energy appliance rebate had been high.

“It’s no surprise that air conditioners have been the most popular over the recent heatwave since the program opened a couple of weeks ago, with almost  8,000 applications,” he said.

“This rebate is helping Queenslanders to cool the cost of living by upgrading to a new and more energy efficient model and save on ongoing running costs.

“This is part of our $2 billion Affordable Energy Plan to help drive Queenslanders power bills.”

The rebates apply to new, eligible four-star or higher appliances purchased from 1 January, 2018. The scheme offers $200 for washing machines; $250 for fridges and $300 for air conditioners.

Queenslanders who have already bought new energy-efficient fridges, air-cons and washing machines since 1 January, and have registered for the rebate, have until 20 March to apply.

Queenslanders who have purchased an eligible appliance since19 January or are considering a new purchase have 30 days from date of purchase to apply.

Statewide, Queenslanders are receiving rebates for more than 4400 energy efficient air conditioners, almost 3000 fridges and more than 4200 washing machines.
