New riverside public green space for South Bank

South Bank Corporation has submitted concept plans for a new green riverside open space at its iconic location.

The space, formerly occupied by the Riverside Restaurants that were affected by the 2011 floods, will be a world-class example of urban redevelopment.

Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Cameron Dick said the green space would feature world-class designs to entice visitors back to a space that was devastated by the 2011 floods.

“Concept plans have been submitted to the Brisbane City Council for the development, which was promised last year as part of the 25-year anniversary celebrations for South Bank,” Mr Dick said.

“The Riverside Open Space Project will deliver a high-quality 6,816sqm riverside green space precinct that will leverage the prime riverfront position opened up by the removal of the Riverside Restaurants.”

Construction is expected to begin mid-year and we would expect it to set a new benchmark in quality parklands for the public within the precinct.

“South Bank is one of the jewels in the crown of Queensland destinations and plays host to many of the city’s major events, including the upcoming Commonwealth Games baton relay on Saturday.”

South Bank Corporation Chief Executive Officer Bill Delves said the new green community space will feature barbecue facilities, public art, water feature, riverfront events and function space.

“South Bank is a special place for the 11 million local, national and international visitors who enjoy our precinct every year,” Mr Delves said.

“The new urban redevelopment project will give back to the community that is so loyal to us. That project will connect our visitors to the heart of South Bank and to the Brisbane River.”

This development is an addition to the recently opened urban redevelopment Flowstate, which features a year-long program of free community performances, workshops, green open space and an amazing interactive digital light and sound installation, “Jem”.
